Personal Statement of Purpose for entering into an MPA program of study with special emphasis on Healthcare Administration

Civil war, suffering, poverty and death are things that most Americans, and thankfully so, will never personally experience. Before I was *****teen, I had endured all four. I was raised in *****, Sierra Leone and lived through civil war, coming to America with my family after surviving ***** years of war. I made my way through the streets of *****, *****, a teenager in a strange land, and my family and I began again. Even then I felt a passion for helping people and, particularly social justice. My feet are firmly on the path of affecting change and am prepared for some of the most challenging work of my life. I am determined to do research into the areas of health policy development and delivery of health care services to developing nations that lack the basics of life. In order to make myself more able to tackle the assorted challenges facing these nations, to become a force for change, I will need to familiarize myself with the more sociological side of health care administration.

Obtaining an MPA with an emphasis on Healthcare Administration as opposed to just an MS in Health Administration will make me more versatile and better equipped on the path to achieving my goals. I feel particularly drawn to working in the public sector as I feel I will have greater contact with people, a greater chance to influence people and impact their environments positively. Ideally, I would like to partner with the UN or an NGO, working in developing nations, particularly my homeland of Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone's civil war saw the deaths of about 50, 000 people, and those that weren't killed, lost limbs at the hands of their oppressors. Today, the people of Sierra Leone are some of the poorest on earth. Literacy was hit hard as well, as during the war, 1,270 schools were destroyed. Overall, Sierra Leone's economy is precipitous, fraught with corruption, unemployment and its government at a loss as to how to fix the situation. I know exactly where I would begin, re-vamping public health policies and reshape the health care system, establishing a working model that will be a model for generations to come. What I learned and saw in Haiti as I volunteered on two trips with a mobile clinic was an excellent proving ground for me, and it is there that I first began drawing my plans for Sierra Leone together.

My commitment to my academic career is clear, years of volunteering - feeding and clothing the homeless and AIDS patients here and abroad - is solid evidence of my compassionate nature, and my professional experiences exhibit an understanding of the business side of administration that is complete. Indeed, my work in Human Resources has taught me the causal relationship between policies and the people that they affect. Our ambitions, our dreams, and our future are the things that keep us moving forward. I cannot go forward without thinking of those in need; it is in my blood, and by my experiences. In this great information society, I hear of places like my homeland where governmental subsidies don't or can't reach, and others where they reach but don't scratch the surface of need. And still others where the divide between the rich and the poor determines diagnostics, treatments and medicine.

Whether or not I must forget the past is immaterial. I know that I never will. I have stared at a truth few can bear. The tragedies of my past have not crushed my spirit or my will. Having traveled this world, the developed and the developing, and having lived as an immigrant, my perceptions are very different; a worldview. I want to bring a voice to others, people like me, which feel that they are not being heard. There is no doubt in my mind that my future is in helping people survive.Do Not Plagiarize.
