Personal Statement of Purpose for entering into a Ph.D. Applied Mathematics

Growing up in [City in Former Soviet Union], arguably better known as “*****” or ***** *****, [Country in Former Soviet Union]'s equivalent of Silicon Valley, I was encouraged from an early age to utilize to the fullest extent my inherent gifts. As a result, I have excelled in every academic venture I have undertaken, adopting my parents' standards of how to conduct yourself in life, to be disciplined, persistent in your pursuits and above all to work hard at everything you do. I have an inquisitive nature, and enjoy challenges and mysteries. I resolved to take on the intellectual challenges applied mathematics offered and dedicate my life to its pursuit. As a child, I remember my father giving me a simple computer game, one that illustrated some basic laws of physics. The game gave me the ability to alter various settings, manipulating a scenario in which a car would speed towards a wall. I spent hours changing the speed of the car, its size, the composition of the wall, and watching the results unfold. I was left wanting more, and sought out other, similar computer games, that would slake my intense interest in modeling physical situations that mirrored reality.

What began as a child's fascination has turned into an adult obsession, a devoted pursuit of numerical simulation, one in which the study of complex systems and natural phenomena that would be otherwise too expensive, dangerous, or theoretically impossible to study or synthesize in a laboratory. Nothing has ever come close to touching the passion I have for applied mathematics, its ability to model, simulate, analyze, and experience diverse sets of problems from an array of physical sciences, a transsystemic analysis and development of what was once only theory, now made reality. Upon graduating from ***** -***** Engineering Physical Institute - I am eager to begin my advanced research, my Ph.D. thesis in Applied Mathematics, focusing on the area of mathematical modeling. More specifically, my research interests include but are not limited to scientific computing, numerical analysis, and non-linear processes in optics and their applications. Indeed, the study of the propagation of light pulses in nonlinear optical media is of great interest to me as well as its technologic applications. This all sounds so clinical compared to what I truly feel for this area: the beauty of the sophisticated mathematics is at the heart of these applications and exactly what stirs me to, what I can only call pleasant speculation. Nanophotonics is a relatively new area of science, and I have been continually impressed by its ongoing contributions to science and technology. What is more, these materials do not exist in nature, and display almost preternatural properties, literally weaving what could only be dreamed before, and seemingly has no end. I am eager to be a part of this truly cutting-edge burgeoning science.

In terms of my future, post-graduation, I am intent upon filling my time as a professor of applied mathematics, allying myself with a reputable university, one that offers ample opportunities for ongoing research, publishing my findings and continuing education in the form of attending conferences, collaborating with my extended group of colleagues from around the world. I want to show and bring to the classroom examples of what can be achieved by being resolute in your ambitions, as a lifestyle choice. In terms of my the applications of my work, I anticipate creating useful things that can be applied to the amelioration of lives everywhere, be it in writing texts, articles, developing software to support scientific work, or direct applications of my experiments' results. Anti plagiarism software utilized by schools, employers, program directors, and businesses are ALL fully aware of our samples!

The lecture halls of America's universities are only increasing their representation of diversity, and I will continue this reflection in my Ph.D. studies and in my subsequent professorship. Coming from *****, I represent [ethic group], a unique and proud cultural heritage within [country in former Soviet Union]'s borders. In the most practical sense, my exposure to differing cultures in [country in former Soviet Union], world travels and ability to speak three languages - I am developing my understanding of two other languages, as well - have given me the capability of communicating effectively with people from many backgrounds and creeds. This skill will aid me invaluably in reaching out to my fellow students and later burgeoning student scientists, in a classroom that will undoubtedly feature students from around the globe.

I bring with me an excellent foundation in physics and a specialization in the dynamics of molecular phenomena, work that emphasized surface physics, solid-state physics and physical kinetics. My undergraduate and subsequent graduate work has developed my ability to think analytically, quickly attributing the most applicable mathematical means by which to develop solutions. The work has consistently required a high degree of self-discipline, the ability to work autonomously, attention to detail, time management, openness to new material, theories and processes, further developing my theoretical and applied acumen. Do Not Plagiarize.

Furthermore, I am no stranger to research work, and working within a team of researchers comprised of two professors and two other students, as well as exposure to areas of study slightly different from my chosen field. Our work focused on the study of physical phenomena on the surface of a solid, particularly analyzing the properties of carbon, agentum or aurum - nanosized clusters - deposited on a silicium substrate. More specifically, we analyzed the localization of electrons of the nanoclusters of materials on the silicium surface, extracting the properties of their physical systems. While this work differs from my own chosen field, the experiences and skills learned will translate fluidly and easily to my own area of focus.

The University of *****, and particularly *****, has been called “***** *****”, a clear indication of the focus of the quality of research being conducted. No other school could offer me more in terms of such incomparable focus. This is my field, where I feel fulfilled and aim to leave my mark in. There are countless opportunities in the field of Applied Mathematics, and standing in the middle of it, one cannot see its edges. Through a position in a quality educational program, I can help make that field even larger.
