Personal Statement of Purpose for entering into a Master of Science in Mathematics Program

U***'s Department of Mathematics is my sole choice for further academic development. I have reached a point in my academic career where I want to conduct graduate work focusing on pure mathematics, particularly number theory, working with prime number theory, and the proving of the primality of a number, such as in the ECPP method. I bring with me a foundation in mathematics that is sound, and from one of the finest educational institutions in the world. I have been impressed by the Department of Mathematics involvement in the world arena, conducting seminars that give students the opportunity to be put in touch with some of the brightest minds and latest developments in contemporary research in mathematics. While I have maintained a 3.31 GPA, and have been a U***** **** and ***** Scholar, as well as a making the Student Math Center's Dean's List, I do not feel that my GPA accurately reflects the seriousness with which I have approached my academic work, nor my true competence. My GPA however does reflect an emphasis I placed upon participating in various organizations, including being a co-founder of a non-profit group, **** **** **** (***), and acting as Treasurer, organizing and conducting fundraisers, raising over $1K for refugees in ******. Working as the Finance Chair for the student organization National Society of ***** Engineers and Sciences, I have helped promote ideas for successful fundraising endeavors. Additionally, I have been the Project Director of a ***** hypertension project, holding informational sessions regarding hypertension, distributing literature on the topic and conducting hypertension screening utilizing our Red Cross certification. I truly love math, treasured my time as a math tutor in high school and this love for the subject will make me work all the more diligently in my graduate and subsequent doctoral research. My work in the non-profit sector has made me even more adamant and goal-oriented than ever before, and my sights are set upon on a Ph.D. in Mathematics. To be successful in the field of Mathematics research, and satisfied both personally and professionally, I bring with me the distinct desire to bring change to the field in terms of its increased diversity. I came to the US from *****, ***** Africa in 1996, and have developed a worldview tempered by my international education and experiences. I have asked myself a number of times, why is it that in this country born of immigrants and rich in its diversity have I gone through my entire academic career without ever having an African-American math instructor? This is a reflection of a deficit of appropriate ethnic representation in the field. It is my aim to break this mold, acting as a role model and an instrument of change for minority students. While many educators are being educated in the ideals of cultural competency, I will be able to reach out and be an example to African-American and other students of Black ancestry, encouraging them to consider a future in math and science. In this golden age of equal opportunity, it is time to put diversity on the front doors of opportunity for minorities.
