Personal Statement of Purpose for entering into a quality Ph.D. Computer Science Program

Wherever opportunities did not exist, I made them happen. Going to high school in my homeland of [Southeast Central European nation], I was not just another student. Instead, I constantly sought out experiences beyond the classroom and the textbook, assisting my computer science and math teachers, as well as being a lab assistant for my chemistry teacher. The [Southeast Central European nation] university system though, is distinctly conservative and discouraging of students exploring different interests, or individual paths. To stay in [Southeast Central European nation], would have been a choice to stagnate, to not flourish; to my mind, this was not an option. Leaving everything I had ever known behind, I turned to America’s finest educational institutions, and found the source of my passion for computer science in Robotics. Do not copy our samples.

In the US, my spirited nature, and desire to challenge myself further found me joining a Computer Science team in their preparation for the IEEE aerial robotics competition. At the time, I lacked programming experience, but thoroughly enjoyed helping out in any way I could, and gaining insights with each new task. With each accomplishment, set back and decision, my intense interest in the coupling of analytic Computer Science though and the hands-on nature of Robotics was solidified. Completing Computer Science courses found me majoring in Computer Science. Proof of my ability and desire to explore Robotics can be found in my participating in the same competition two years later, this time in a lead position and both times, our team came in third place.

Completing a Developmental Robotics course led me to conduct my current and independent research project, and laying a foundation for continuing research at the graduate level, within the realms of developmental and artificial intelligence. More specifically, I look forward to exploring CVMR and the areas of object detection and orientation, communication, machine learning and virtual environment recognition. I have read with great interest about developments in stereovision research, line and region extraction as well as motion analysis. The applications of computer and robots recognizing and detecting objects automatically and real time touches my imagination. In the most practical terms, a quality Ph.D. Computer Science program will also enable me to increase and further refine my existing research skills as well as my grasp of security, cryptography, databases and data mining. Post-graduation, I envision being an integral member within a research group working for either a university or large-scale multinational company such as Google or Microsoft. Upon building my exposure in the field, I envision making positive contributions to our ever growing body of knowledge of robotics and AI. By aiding in the progress of these fields, the applications, constructing robots that can learn on their own, will have a direct impact on the next generation of search-and-rescue robots, and or space and marine exploration.

I bring with me to the student body and graduate program a solid foundation in Computer Science and Chemistry, coupled with extensive practical experiences in the field of IT, Business Analysis and Project Management and Development. My schedule reflects my desire to absorb as much as I can and much like the field of Robotics, the multidisciplinary, transsytemic nature of my experiences. While working full-time to support myself, I am also interning for the Information Systems department at my alma mater, helping the Computer Science team prepare for the ACM programming competition and still find time to conduct independent Robotics research, creating virtual environments for real robots in order to enhance the testing of search-and-rescue, and advance machine learning fields. Having conducted research and completed professional business work, I have seen and applied a myriad of ways Computer Science helps in our everyday lives. Our Samples are viewed hundreds of times per day!

I would like to take this opportunity to express that my near-perfect grades during my four years of college and my usual level of performance within my major subjects of Computer Science were challenged due to some very difficult issues that I was going through with my family. The truest reflection of my ability can be found in my passion for my work, experiences that I have actively sought out, procured and grown from since that time.

Computer Science and Robotics are fields that speak their own distinct languages, and I feel my multilingual abilities reflect this. My aptitude and affinity for languages is reflected in my having processed one semester’s worth of Italian in one week, a feat I accomplished in order to register for a higher level class studying in [European nation]. Moreover, my internships involved learning and applying SQL, HTML, and Virtual Basic, while my current job required me to learn Perl and SQR. Anti plagiarism software utilized by schools, employers, program directors, and businesses are ALL fully aware of our samples!

Completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science has only left me that much more eager to increase my depth of understanding of Robotics. Robotics poses some of the greatest analytic challenges I have ever faced, but each reward, each step forward brings the highest levels of personal and professional satisfaction; no other field has ever brought me these feelings. I look forward with great eagerness to being a creative leader for research in the field of computer science and robotics.

Thank you for your time and consideration.
